TITLE
OZ & KANSAS
Description: Oz and Kansas, is a mural and adaptive reuse of two temporary encasements for the new Transitway Extension by artist Brandon Hill of All Day Projects. Oz and Kansas draws inspiration from The Wizard of OZ, by L. Frank Baum.
Oz and Kansas is a single piece that spans two locations — just as Dorothy jumps between two worlds in the book, one imagined and one real. The piece remixes colors drawn from nature along The Mount Vernon Trail with bolder colors and shapes, further accentuating this imagery with extruded and hand-cut shapes. It reimagines the transitway locations, creating two distinct places that are connected but very much not the same. Locations that build the whimsy of “somewhere else” and “home.”
The works are painted with enamel, acrylic, pencil, and a clear coat. The shapes and objects are CNC & hand cut and installed in-place.

PROCESS PROCESS PROCESS
Core Concept - was to create an awesome public art opportunity showing a landscape inspired mural with extruded and dimensional elements. This effect will gave a 3 dimensional feel to the work. With shapes being extruded it will create a cool effect with the viewer.
When the artwork was finalized, a vector sketch of the project was created as a Map, and Individual pieces were identified and planned to be dimensional. Pieces were then CNC cut and affixed to the construction barrier.
CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, which is a manufacturing process that uses a computer to control and operate machinery. CNC machines use pre-programmed software to move and operate, allowing for greater precision, efficiency, and customization. Below shows that process. Millwork and Pieces Were designed and Cut in Maryland by Social Supply Design a local fabrication and interior design studio. Special thanks to Ryan Ryskamp and his Team for the amazing work.
The Idea was to Create. select, and exaggerate certain shapes at 2.25, 1.5, and 3/4 inch depths. Below is the project progression from sketch to reality.
