Full Description:
Conceptually, I thought of two core ideas.
A. What is an inflection point ( not the buzzword )
B. Can I represent a movement visually?
I started by researching some powerful moments in Civil Rights and Workers’ rights history, from the likes of Delores Huierata, Rosa Parks with the Montgomery bus boycotts, to the Stonewall uprising in New York City I sampled what they looked like, In true color, and started to build out the art piece using this established color pallet.
I then layered in a sine wave to show its inflection point. Mathematically an inflection point is defined as A point of inflection where a curve goes from being concave to convex or vice versa. Socially An inflection point refers to a key event that changes the trajectory of some process or situation related to the economy or society, resulting in either positive or negative results. With enough critical mass, that can lead to a spontaneous and often irreversible change of direction. In math this easy to understand where this point is, in society, it is not clear and is often only understood in hindsight. The question we have to ask ourselves is what side of that bell curve do we want to be on. And how can you understand it using lessons learned in history and the power of foresight.
